Red Colored Stars Rebecca Wescott i think that this song is about how things in the past are holding him back from what he wants to feel. the thoughts in his head hold him captive and go with every move he makes. and then one day maybe he'll open his eyes and he'll feel the love that he's been holding back from.
Steve i would like to add my interpretation of "red colored stars". i actually talked to jimmy before and after the concert in Indiana with the wallflowers. here's how the conversation went: Hey Jimmy I've got a quick question for you. I was reading on your website that when you heard the final tracking of “Red Colored Stars” that it brought tears to your eyes. I was just wondering what the red colored stars are to you... (looks away) “Initially I thought the song was going to be really aggressive and angry like I just wanted to hit someone so fucking hard that they saw stars, and the stars would be red from anger. But the more I thought about the song the more I realized that the red colored stars were a good thing. They came to symbolize to me all the good things in life like love, relationships, fun, being happy with what you have and just enjoying waking up every morning. But I still wanted the song to be balanced so when I sing (sings) “There's a wall in my way!” that's the bad things in life coming out that keep me from being happy. And when I say “red colored stars in my hand are the stones that we cast...” I'm talking about someone trying to forcefully take away everything from me that I have and it's about holding on so tight (makes fist) because you don't want to let it go.” He went on to say, “It's really just an emotional song for me because it makes me think about things that have happened in my life that have really affected me.”
~T~ In life sometimes we are forced to kill the honest, pure love we are each born into the world full of. letting yourself let go because the pain of loving someone or something and having it all fall apart is just to much. You really think that you will never ever find someone or something to take that chance with again, and then it lands in your lap. you want to love, so bad you can taste it, but you feel as though your soul is void of any and all love to give. (the wall) is the way you are, well, think you are empty of love and the red color mentioned to me continues to represent love. love that is there, but scares you to let go of. and the stars to me represent the fact that we each want to shine in our own way, shine with love(thus the red) and self respect, and for me anyhow, i want to be doing what that lil voice in my soul tells me to do, even if i dont get it at the time,so in that sense i would also be following my destiny, or fate, which also connects in with the whole stars issue. ******************************************* I love this song, but i would write another verse where this person lets go, and loves, and finally finds the missing pieces of his/her soul.
Jeri I know this isn't how the song was written, but when you think about it and compare the song you can get this interpretation. Communism = Red Stars "there's a wall in my way" = Berlin Wall "tell the worms they can soon eat tonight" = Foreshadowing death So that's partly how I fitted the song to the end of communism, it may seem a bit odd, but this interpretation is clear
